Mobi Passport Review
This Mobi Passport Review looks at the best overseas prepaid mobile internet solution I've found.
Regular readers of this site will know how much I love to dig up deals on mobile internet for when we're all abroad so we can save money!1.
Well now there's Australian provider Mobi Passport, provider of prepaid SIMs for overseas prepaid mobile internet. You can now buy a prepaid mobike internet SIM for the country you're visiting before you go, with or without credit loaded.
Take a minute and imagine yourself stepping off your plane, popping your Mobi Passport SIM in, et, voila, internet on your phone. Perfect!
The hassle of finding a phone shop, asking for something in a foreign language (not a hassle if you learn some basic local language) and getting everything sorted is not something we all want to deal with straight after a (usually long) flight. We just want the simplicity and ease of getting off the plane and having Internet, or, getting credit from a supermarket.
How Mobi Passport Works
If you're wondering How Mobi Passport Works, it's pretty straightforward.
- From the Mobi Passport website, you choose a SIM card/s according to which countries you'd like to have access to mobile internet in. You can choose to have credit preloaded if you like, or purchase it from the site just before you go.
- The Mobi Passport wallet is mailed to you with your SIMs, along with instructions.
- Just pop the SIM in when you land and you're pretty much good to go. If you didn't have credit preloaded, you'll just need to buy some credit. For instance, in France, you can get credit for Orange at supermarkets, petrol stations and many other locations. Much easier than finding a phone shop.
Supported Phones and FAQ
The SIMs shipped are all microsims, but ship with adaptors for standard SIM cards, so you can rock Mobi Passport in your iPhone 4, iPhone 3G/S and iPad as well as Android or other smartphones.
Mobi Passport has an FAQ page.
The Only Downside (for Now)
Whilst this product is perfect for the Aussie readers, it isn't available for people outside Oz (yet), as Mobi Passport currently only ships to Australian addresses. This means unless you have a friend in Oz you have have it shipped to, you'll have to wait until Mobi Passport expand their offering to other major cycling travel markets. .
However, given most of us plan our trips well in advance, it ought not be an issue for you to order this from Australia in time for your trip. If you get stuck, contact me, and I might be able to buy it and ship it for you.
The VeloNomad overseas prepaid mobile internet information page has information on where to buy SIMs locally. In most cases, you can get the SIM at a shop. For instance in France, get an Orange Mobicarte SIM and add Internet Max (activation instructions).
Mobi Passport Review Rating
I am absolutely shocked by this idea; it's simple, it's effective, and it's totally needed by many of us.
If you want to save yourself time, headaches and hassle, check out Mobi Passport. As a product it gets 8/10 from me.
